This study explores the structure, function, and diachronic evolution of Chinese extended middle construction. The dissertation consists of eight chapters. After the literature review of the current studies, I establish the status of Chinese extended middle construction through comparative studies in chapter two. Then I shift to the context where Chinese extended middle construction emerges and put forwards that this construction is a double-topic nested structure in chapter three. This leads to tackle the stratification and extension of this construction in chapter four. Chapter five further investigates the syntactic distributions of this construction as well as its function and meaning, based on which I put forward the synchronic grammaticalization analysis model. In chapter six and seven I continue to discover how this construction comes out, and what kinds of factors motivate and make it come into being. Chapter eight is the conclusion of the dissertation.
