dc.description.abstractThis thesis describes syntheses and characterization of several molecular salts and silver(I) coordination compounds of certain linear olefins. The relative orientations of these olefins in the solid state structures of these molecular salts and silver(I) coordination compounds have been analysed in terms of their solid state [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction to synthesize a particular isomer of the corresponding cyclobutane compounds. The crucial role of the anions in the selective preorganization before photodimerization and the acid catalysed isomerisation of the cyclobutane derivatives have been explored. It also has been shown how the cooperation of various supramolecular interactions with argentophilic interaction resulted in parallel alignment of linear olefins in various silver(I) coordination compounds. These cyclobutane derivatives have been shown to serve as a potential class of ligands for making co-crystals and coordination polymers.
