dc.description.abstract | The world contains an abundance of media and new technologies which are aiding in individual communication. Although main expectation of those technologies are to aid in building and maintaining family relationships, there is a discontent in the modern society that technology is also responsible for the lack of communication between children and parents. With the advancement of Internet, children are spending more time confined to private places playing on computers, rather than spending time with their family enjoying common activities. This is enhanced by the fact that in most families both parents are working away from home during the day time. The research theme ?Communication media for family and children? relates to the approach of using communication technologies to connect disembodied family members who are addicted to the present hectic life style. With this motivation, the main aim of this research is to focus on a new dimension for existing communication methodologies currently dominated by text-, auditory-, and vision-based methods. The study is exploring into the space of this domain; developing two working prototypes. The first prototype developed is ?Petimo?: an interactive, robotic toy designed specifically for children to protect them from potential risks in social networks by providing a safely connected exclusive social networking environment. With an introduction of a robotic companion, it adds physical dimension to social networking encouraging children to make friends in physical presence, expecting that they would engage more in physical activities than active in virtual space. The second prototype, ?Food Internet Communication? supports in communicating personal feelings digitally through food, which is a very traditional and cultural communication element in any society. Food as a communication media involves sending different types of messages through changing properties of the food, such as colour, shape etc. The user experience suggests that the prototypes provide more enjoyment and a sense of being safely connected to other remote members of the family. | |
