dc.description.abstractAs palladium is increasingly scarce, the efficient separation and recovery of the metal is highly sought after nowadays. Many recent advances in separation and adsorption science and technology for metal ion removal are attributed to the innovative use of nanoscale adsorbents. Nonetheless, the use of nanoadsorbents for metal ion removal is rare because of their low adsorption capacity and the difficulty in separating these nanoadsorbents. To overcome these problems, poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) based nanoparticles that are highly monodispersed were prepared with a modified surfactant free emulsion polymerization (SFEP) method. The robustness and stability of the prepared nanoparticles was examined and enhanced by manipulating the synthesis recipes. Their adsorption isotherms and kinetics for palladium sequestration, as well as their reuse after repeated adsorption-desorption processes were assessed too. The separation performance of these nanoparticles with a membrane filtration system was also investigated.
