Abstract: This thesis consists of two major parts: (a) studies on benzimidazolin-2-ylidene complexes; (b) studies on pyrazole-based remote N-heterocyclic carbene (rNHC) complexes. In the first part, a large variety of Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes with the sterically bulky 1,3-diisopropylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene or 1,3-dibenzhydrylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene ligand have been synthesized. The catalytic activities of selected complexes were investigated in C-C coupling reactions. In addition, the reactivity of a dimeric monocarbene Pd(II) complex towards different donors was studied in detail. In the second part, a modular synthetic approach towards pyrazole-based rNHC complexes is described. A number of mononuclear, dinuclear and multinuclear Pd(II) complexes with this type of rNHC and different co-ligands have been prepared and the catalytic activity of selected complexes was studied in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction.
