Title: | Lightweight Metal Based Composites | Authors: | GOH CHWEE SIM | Keywords: | nanocomposite; magnesium; carbon nanotubes; basal slip; fatigue | Issue Date: | 6-May-2008 | Citation: | GOH CHWEE SIM (2008-05-06). Lightweight Metal Based Composites. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | In this study, Mg nanocomposites were developed using the liquid and powder metallurgy routes. Carbon nanotubes and nanosized particulate MgO and Y2O3 were used as the reinforcement. The effect of volume/ weight fraction of reinforcements on Mg was investigated, and it was found that the addition of nanosized reinforcements in Mg generally led to an improvement in yield and tensile strengths. An increase in ductility was observed in Mg-CNT nanocomposites, and it was attributed to the more active basal slip mode and the presence of prismatic slip. Mg nanocomposites exhibited much improved yield strength as compared to micron-sized particulate reinforced Mg composites due to the higher amount of geometrically necessary dislocations generated around the nanosized reinforcements. Basal slip and twinning were the main deformation modes in Mg-Y2O3 nanocomposites during extrusion, and non-basal slip was found to be activated during tensile. | URI: | http://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/28168 |
