In this project, highly ordered mesoporous SiO2 a?? CaO bioactive glasses were successfully synthesized via surfactant templating route. The formation and bioactivities of the ordered mesoporous bioactive glasses were investigated systematically. In order to investigate the effects of the ordered mesoporous structure on bioactivities, disordered porous bioactive glasses with the same composition were fabricated via a conventional so-gel route. Immersion tests in simulated body fluid (SBF) were conducted on both of the bioactive glasses to compare the bioactivities between these two glasses. As drug carriers, antibiotic gentamicin was incorporated into the ordered mesoporous bioactive glasses. The drug release profiles were monitored and the effects of drug loading on bioactivities were studied. In order to optimize the drug release behaviors, PLGA biodegradable polymer was employed to encapsulate the drug loaded bioactive glasses to form composite microspheres. The effects of the microsphere encapsulation on the bioactivities of the composite were also investigated.
