Abstract: Aim: To investigate Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor (bFGF) expression during early healing phase of immediate and delayed replanted teeth compared to normal periodontium. Methods: The roots were harvested after A?, 2, 3 and 4 days of replantation for immunohistomorphometric evaluation of percentage of immunopositive cells and ECM intensity of cementum, PDL and bone. Results: PDL cell count was lower (P=0.02) in delayed replantation group than immediate replantation group at A? day. In bone, within immediate replantation group, cell count at 4days (P=0.01) was higher than A? day. In cementum, intensity was higher at 2 (P=0.01), 3 (P=0.01) days immediate replantation groups and at A? (P=0.01), 2 (P=0.01) and 3 (P=0.00) days delayed replantation groups compared to non-experimental group. Bone cell count was lower than cementum at A? (P=0.00), 2 (P=0.01), 3 (P=0.01) days immediate replantation groups and A? day (P=0.00) delayed replantation groups and also lower than PDL at A? (P=0.00), 2 (P=0.01), 3 (P=0.00) days immediate replantation groups and A? day (P=0.01) delayed replantation group. Cementum cell count was lower than PDL at A? day (P=0.01) immediate replantation group. Conclusion: Expression of bFGF in all periodontal structures of non-replanted and healing replanted teeth implicated its role in periodontal healing.
