To my supervisor, Dr Wang Lijian (王力坚博士), Senior lecturer from Department of Chinese studies, for his guidance, understanding and patience with me throughout my Honors Year for this thesis. To Ms Yan Geling (严歌苓), who is so kind and gracious to grant me an interview with her to discuss her works and her literary aspirations amidst her busy schedule in Singapore. To my teachers and classmates in Chinese Studies, especially Shufen, Huibing, Junwei, Guangtong, Yunshu, Junjie and my Chinese philosophy class, for the times that we have shared. Thank you all for your encouragement, concern and “supervision”. It has been wonderful to know all of you. To Dr Liu Xiaogan, Dr Liu Hong and Ms Zhou Qin, for you have enriched me with your inspirational and wonderful lessons. Last but not least, to my two dear friends who have helped me tremendously in my preparation for this thesis, Jinglun and Zhiying. I would not have done it in time without your support and advice.
