INTEGRATING INTERGENERATIONAL PLAYGROUNDS IN HDB ESTATES

Abstract

Public spaces in HDB play an important role in building a strong sense of community and foster a sense of belonging through shared spaces. This is a reflection of the ‘Gotong Royong’ spirit, commonly known as the Kampung Spirit. This spirit was prevalent during the olden days where Kampung residents before residents in Kampungs were moved into HDB flats where residents are more secluded. This spirit entails a strong community, where people help and support one another. With the eradication of Kampungs in Singapore, public spaces in HDB estates have a crucial role as a gathering node where residents can socialise and interact with one another through engaging in community-bonding activities. However, shared spaces in HDB are segregated to where the fitness corners are for the elderly, and the playground for young kids. This creates a divide within the community for residents from a different age group, widening the generation gap and the societal gap. Play is a common activity for adults and adolescents, regardless of age, the function of community playgrounds can be further investigated to implement new elements of intergenerational play, to bridge the gap between different age groups. Through play between individuals from different generations, creates greater opportunity for building a stronger connection within the community, and to create a greater sense of belonging to their estate.
