Abstract: The incremental sheet forming (ISF) process outcompetes many other forming processes in terms of tool universality and system flexibility. The introduction of robot manipulators for conducting the ISF process further increases system flexibility compared to the ISF process with a CNC machine. However, the robotic ISF process suffers from the vibration of the forming tool due to the reduced structural stiffness compared to a CNC machine, which results in the occurrence of the chatter phenomenon with multiple negative effects. This work investigates the factors that lead to the occurrence of the chatter phenomenon and proposes a scheme that suppresses the chatter by adjusting those factors before the initiation of the robotic ISF process.
