dc.description.abstractThis present study deals with stigma. It is concerned with the stigmatizing effects of prostitution and the various coping strategies that arise when the prostitutes deal with stigma. The paper attempts to single out the factors that influence the perceptions of the prostitutes. The processes that take place to cope with the girls’ identity as prostitutes are also examined. Chapter One deals with the aims and theoretical framework adopted in the study. Chapter Two recounts the methodology used and the various difficulties encountered by the researcher. Chapter Three attempts to show the impact of stereotypes on the prostitutes f social encounters with straight society and the use of stereotypes as a means of social control. This is related to the means by which the prostitutes avoid stereotyping situations. Chapter Four examines the various factors that may affect the public's perceptions of prostitutes and the prostitutes 1 perceptions of stigma. The prostitutes may use these factors to lessen the impact of stigmatization. Chapter Five is concerned with the social context in which prostitution occurs and how this affects the type of coping strategies used. Chapter Six concentrates on the impact of stigma on the self. Chapter Seven attempts a classification of the various coping strategies according to four factors.
