ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | In the beginning of the 20th century, Russia and other imperialist countries started to invade China. In July 1900, the Russians were successful in making the Northeastern Provinces, in Manchuria, their own. The Russians made the Chinese government signed several treaties, which were to their advantage. The news of Russian’s oppression in China aroused the anger of many Chinese in many parts of the world, and they (especially natives of China) started the Anti-Russian Movement. This thesis aims to study the Chinese response to the Anti-Russian Movement through one of Australia’s earliest Chinese newspaper - Tung Wah Times. After reading through the articles regarding the Anti-Russian Movement, we can categorized the articles as: firstly, reports on Russian’s cunning and unruly act in China; secondly, patriotic articles written by readers; and thirdly, reports on overseas Chinese reaction to the Russian’s invasion. In addition, we found out that Australia Chinese were different in their approaches, compared to the natives of China, when they participated in the Anti-Russian Movement. These findings are useful for research on relevant issues such as the research on Overseas Chinese Anti-American Boycott Movement in 1905. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/244119 |
