THE WAYS OF POWER: MORALITY AND POLITICS IN HAN FEI AND THOMAS HOBBES. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The present dissertation attempts to refute the long-standing inscription of Han Fei and Thomas Hobbes within the realm of amoralism. Drawing a parallel between the two thinkers, I argue that their specific brand of political realism does not amount to excluding all moral concerns as the interpretative literature often portrays. The study begins by investigating the background that allowed the amoralist claim to emerge in the first place, and further draws significant similarities between the two philosophers’ outlook on human nature, rejection of virtue-based merit claims to political power, and overall vision for the world. The second part analyses Han Fei and Hobbes’s theory of rulership in light of the ‘problem of the harmful ruler’ and posits that they elaborated on similar protective schemes to contain and limit the sovereign’s influence. Finally, the third part of the study investigates the moral features of law in each author’s thought. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/241473 |
