ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Teochew opera has its origins in the Ming Dynasty ( 1368 - 1644 ) which was developed from the southern opera in China. Major migration of the Chinese helped to bring this traditional performing art to other parts of the world, especially to the Southeast Asia. The first Teochew opera troupe to arrive Singapore is believed to be Lau Sai Yong Hong troupe ( 老赛永丰班) in the early 20th century. Thereinafter, more Teochew opera troupes made their way to Singapore. Teochew opera was able to gain popularity from the Teochew society, especially during the 1930s and 1950s. Most performances were held in areas near Singapore River where the Teochews lived. They also made frequent visits to villages to perform in the temples for deities during festivals and lunar seventh month. The purpose of this thesis is to examine Singapore Teochew opera troupes after World War II for a time period between 1945 - 1965. Teochew opera can be classified into two kinds of performance: entertainment and religious performance. After years of hardships in the war, the demand for entertainment grew tremendously. The demand for Teochew opera, which is an entertainment commodity, grew as well. Teochew opera movies that were screened in the late 50s proved to be a hit with the Chinese and that further boost the popularity of this performing art in Singapore. This thesis further discuss the factors that affects the changes in the troupe and its development in other areas like the music, performing venues, troupe structure, children actor etcetera. Malaya Teochew Opera Trade Union was formed during this period. The formation of the union helped its fellow troupe employee attain better welfare benefits from their employer. Unexpected circumstances forced the union to set up its own Teochew opera troupe with the members in the management. Their existence changed the life of many troupe members. This research used a combination of techniques like readings, interview and oral history. I hope that all these can contribute towards a better understanding of Singapore Teochew Opera between the time period 1945 - 1965. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/238983 |
