EXPLORING THE EXPERIENCES AND NEEDS OF CARE LEAVERS FROM CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS HOMES

Abstract

This exploratory study aims to understand the experiences of care leavers, as well as their needs and the factors affecting their life after discharge. In order to better understand their transition out of residential care, Schlossberg’s (1981) Model for Analyzing Human Adaptation to Transition was used to examine the various factors involved in transitions, that would lead to eventual adjustment. A total of 6 qualitative interviews were conducted with care leavers who have been discharged from residential care. Findings revealed the various experiences of care leavers, such as the differences and similarities of life before and after discharge, their needs after discharge, impact of discharge, as well as their personal reflections on perceived adjustment to life after discharge. Risk and protective factors mediating their adjustment were explored, where major factors such as perception of discharge, support systems, individual characteristics and preparation were revealed. The study’s findings allow for better understanding of the care leaver’s journey out of care, as well as how organisations would be able to better support future care leavers in ensuring a smooth exit from residential care.
