环境、条件、抉择: 新加坡一贯道宝光建德和发一天恩(群英)组线发展研究 = Environment, Attributes and Choice: A Study of the Development of Yiguandao (Unity Sect) Baoguan Jiande and Fayi Tian'en (Qunying) Sub-Branches in Singapore

Abstract

In most studies, the change in religion is often attributed to environmental factors. However, upon close examination of Yiguandao sub-branches, Baoguang jiande and Fayi tian¿en (qunying) in Singapore, they are similar, but not identical. This poses questions on the extent of influence of the environment on the development of religion and religious groups. What makes the difference since they are subjected to the same environment and doctrine? Through comparison of the activities conducted, organizational structure and self-positioning of the two religious groups, this paper aims to argue that environment factors only narrow down the areas in which religion can develop. Attributes of the group would further narrow down the choices. Where the environment and attributes permit, it is the choice of the respective groups which determines the final form of the group.
