The thesis arose from the quest of a local identity in contemporary music and the concerns of promoting local music culture in the entertainment scene. The program called for a new definition of a music centre reflective of the practice and needs of local musicians. The vehicle chosen comprises a contemporary music facility for amateurs and professionals and a music-related commercial establishment. The site is the future entertainment district, Bugis which now boasts a myriad of building types and activities. The issues of the project arise from the juxtaposition of the brief on the site. On one hand, as a public building geared towards promoting its cause, it calls for close integration with the street fabric and activities. Yet the independent nature of musicians suggests a more private environment, almost an 'underground' atmosphere away from public scrutiny. Thus the project explores the architectural issues generated by the ideas of a sanctuary in Bugis.
