ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | Buddhist precepts have always been deemed as a basic requirement for any devout Buddhist to follow. However, through the study on various historical materials, this paper shows that in early Medieval China even the most eminent monks violated some of the rules. This paper argues that this phenomenon is an indication of Buddhist localization in China because historical records reveal that numerous eminent monks violated Buddhist precepts purposely and their actions were justified either by themselves of by the recorders. By a critical textual analysis of these historical materials, this paper answered the following questions: which precepts were frequently violated by the eminent monks? How were they justified? What was the legitimacy to alter the precepts that were believed to be the legacy of Sakyamuni Buddha? | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/236659 |
