dc.description.abstract | China is entering into an aging society that presents unprecedented challenges. The society is experiencing demographic, economic, and cultural changes that are altering housing and living arrangements. This study examines preferred living arrangements of the elderly in Quanzhou using a deviation of push - pull and life - course movement models and logistic regression analysis. Results indicate that previous employment, followed by status of receiving social and family support is the most important factor in predicting preferred living arrangements for those preferring to stay independently. Previous employment, perception of seniors housing and cultural taboo and belief are important factors affecting the elderly preference of staying in seniors housing. Previous employment is an enabling factor while perception of seniors housing is a motivating factor affecting elderly living preference. However, the cultural taboo and belief of the eldest son providing housing and support for his aging parents may continue to moderate the demand for seniors housing development in Quanzhou. | |
