THE SHOPHOUSE CONSERVATION IN SINGAPORE A CASE STUDY OF JOO CHIAT AREA. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | ‘‘Conservation of cultural and natural heritage is not an impediment on the struggle for better condition of human existence. On contrary, it will enhance and enrich existence, and create economic benefits through the preservation and improvement of tourist attractions." (Pradhan, 1988) The aim of this study is to evaluation the conservation of shophouse in Singapore by a case study of Joo Chiat Conservation Area. The study examines the outcome of revitalising a conserved area by using such an approach, and in particular, studies the implications on economic, social and historical character of the area. A survey and interview were conducted to investigate the public's opinion on the conservation project and to find out whether the conservation works in Joo Chiat Area are successful. The results of the survey revealed that the image of Joo Chiat had changed from old, rundown historical place to a local and tourist attraction after conservation. Although some respondent felt that the revitalisation brought detriments to the historical character of the place, most agreed that is was a good approach in conserving Joo Chiat Conservation Area. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/231728 |
