For a long time, ci poetry is considered as a lyrical literary genre, and its narrative ability is often neglected. In fact, ci poetry also has narrative elements in its structure and content and is thus worth for further studies. Recently, more researchers are aware of this characteristic of ci poetry and focus on the study of its narrative technique. However, these research studies mostly concentrate on well-known writers such as Liu Yong and Zhou Bangyan. He Zhu is a famous ci writer in Northern Song dynasty who have a diverse style of writing. Similarly, He Zhu’s ci also has potential narrative characteristics and plays an important part in the forming the narrative aspect of Song ci. In this paper, I make systematic study on the narrative of He Zhu’s ci based on the current research results and western narratology theory to fill in the related research gaps and define its value in the history of ci lyric. In the introduction, I introduce He Zhu and his writing style. By summerising the current studies on the narrative of ci and the studies on He Zhu’s work, I found that there is a research gap on the narrative of He Zhu’s ci. However, it is important to study a specific ci writer’s narrative characteristic as it helps to construct the narrative tradition of Chinese poetry and explore the ci writer’s literary works from another perspective. In this regard, the purpose of this paper is to systematically discuss the narrative of He Zhu’s ci in the following chapters. The second chapter defines the narrative technique in traditional poetry based on traditional Chinese literary theory and western narratology theory. Moreover, it discovers that the ci poetry has a narrative background and has its narrative elements. The third chapter makes a link between the narrative tradition of traditional poetry and the narrative in He Zhu’s ci. By comparing the Chinese narrative poetics with He Zhu’s ci, it can be seen that there are similarities between them. It shows that He Zhu was greatly affected by the yuefu poetry, he also carried forward the narrative tradition of the traditional poetry and displayed those technics in his work. The fourth chapter analyses the narrative technics and characteristics of He Zhu’s work in details. This includes its narrative theme, point of view, narrative logic, which is the description of time and space in the narrative, and narrative technics such as the use of allusion and the rename of cipai (tune title). Lastly, the paper discusses the significance of He Zhu’s ci by concluding the narrative characteristics of He Zhu’s work and its inheritance from the traditional poetry, affirming that it enriches the narrative technics of ci poetry, and more importantly, reflects the development of the narrative in Song ci. It also helps establish the position of He Zhu’s ci in the history of Chinese poetry.
