Abstract: Despite mental ill-health gaining visibility in recent years, there remains a lack of research on the perceptions of individual psychological disorders in Singapore, especially psychosis. However, this gap needs to be addressed as people with psychosis experience greater levels of stigmatisation compared to other mental disorders. This study explores the perception of psychosis among young adults in Singapore, while considering possible demographic variation and local cultural factors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six university students, where questions related to the knowledge of psychosis, the perception of people with psychosis and reactions towards people with psychosis. Data were analysed using Thematic Analysis, where five higher-order themes emerged: individual perceptions of people with psychosis; social attitudes and behaviour towards people with psychosis; individual reactions towards psychosis; perceived causes of psychosis; and sources of knowledge about psychosis. Overall, negative perceptions of psychosis persist among young adults in Singapore, although less extreme than demonstrated in previous studies. Young adults present an innate motivation to learn more about the experience and are willing to support those with psychosis. Participants also reflected on their reliance on social media and the internet in acquiring knowledge of psychosis. Lastly, both limitations and future research recommendations have been discussed.
