EFFECTS OF MORPHOLOGICAL PROCESSING AND SEMANTIC RICHNESS ON SPELLING-TO-DICTATION PERFORMANCE

Abstract

Words are an important part of human communication, and researchers have long been interested in how semantics affect the way we process and recognise words. However, not much is known about the way we produce words. This study seeks to bridge this gap by examining how semantics influence spelling performance. Specifically, it examines how semantic transparency and semantic richness effects affect spelling-to-dictation performance. Linear mixed effects analyses were used to investigate these effects, and it was found that semantic transparency did not affect spelling performance, while semantic richness effects did facilitate spelling performance in a few different ways. Together, these results shed light on the cognitive mechanisms that underlie the spelling-to-dictation task.
