Studies have shown that modified shorelines are not effective substitutes for natural habitats. To mitigate effects of urbanization on marine communities, eco-engineering enhancements have proven successful in increasing biodiversity on coastlines. As these enhancements encroach into public spaces we must understand public perceptions of modified shorelines and eco-engineering enhancements. A questionnaire-based survey disseminated around Singapore finds the public largely supportive of installing enhancements and making them accessible with proper management. With public support, it could be feasible to use these eco-engineered enhancements in similarly modified, yet previously overlooked, urban waterways and canals. Canal biotic assemblages were found to be driven by site-specific physical and abiotic factors, such as sedimentation and flow rate. This suggests that transitional waterways need bespoke management that caters to specific environmental factors. Overall, these studies provide key baseline data for Singapore and a basis for a wholistic approach to eco-engineering projects in urbanized areas.
