Industry 4.0 is transforming the manufacturing industry as we know of into a smart manufacturing environment with increased automation and data processing bridging the gap between digital and physical world. Digital Twins is one such concept that will bring Industry 4.0 to fruition. A twin model operating in parallel with the real asset yields multiple benefits in predictive maintenance and data generation and analysis. Building a high-fidelity digital twin requires real time communication with least latency. To realize a digital twin, a precision milling machine was designed and fabricated with state-of-the-art control systems capable of adapting to universal communication protocols. Utilizing this machine tool, some frameworks for implementing a digital twin are discussed.
