dc.description.abstractBuilding Information Modeling (BIM) has the potential to become the next-generation solution to transform the construction industry into smart cities. However, there is a lack of research focusing the current development of BIM education in the local context. BIM education is one of the most important investments for Singapore Government to achieve BIM visions. It cannot be neglected as future generations are important assets and will be the leader to set the pace for the whole new industry. This paper studies the current trends of BIM education in the local and global context. It analyses the issues and challenges faced by educators when implementing BIM education. In addition, priorities of two groups of populations, local practitioners and educators were measured through survey questionnaires. Results were analysed using various statistical methods. An overseas case study was also selected to showcase a collaborative BIM teaching with joint-effort of academics and practitioners. Results of the analyses showed that educators and industry practitioners hold different viewpoints in terms of BIM education and academia-industry partnerships are highly recognized. Following that, a theoretical framework was proposed using the results of the findings to tackle the research problem. Recommendations are also provided and it is hoped that this study will break new ground and inspire follow up studies for future research. This paper can be served as the catalyst for a tighter collaboration between academics and industry communities that would lead to a better BIM education for tomorrow students, academics and local practitioners.
