As we enter this time and age, creativity has become an increasing focus as one of the determinants of a World Class economy. Singapore has naturally jumped on the bandwagon. The need for creating attracting and sustain a creative class has led to numerous proposals brought forth by the Singapore government in cultivating this aspect of our economy. In this rat race, emphasis and discussions have been placed upon the numerous top-down approaches, neglecting the fact that hardscapes alone are insufficient. Geylang being known for as the Red Light District presents itself as an unlikely area for the development of the creative industry. However, nestled within Geylang are numerous layers of architectural, cultural, social and economical aspects that juxtapose yet co-exist, creating a unique and authentic dynamic to the area. The heterogeneous quality produced by the high intensity and density sustained in Geylang is the very essence of its culture. This paper seeks to look at the emergence of the creative industry in Geylang, exploring how the spillover effects and mechanisms of the Red Light District, coupled by the urban characteristics of Geylang have provided a suitable environment for the thriving of a creative economy. The unraveling of the buildings, activities and people, in Geylang and surrounding areas ultimately provides insight to the developmental trend of Geylang and how it has impacted the creative industry in Singapore.
