Abstract: Singapore has implemented various programs to build and maintain zero energy buildings as well as to minimize energy consumption of existing buildings. The building sector alone accounted for 38% of electricity consumption in 2014. Moreover, the energy consumption of plug loads is becoming an increasingly pressing issue, especially since past studies have proven that plug loads tend to account for a significant part of a building’s total energy consumption. However, there are limited studies regarding the energy consumption of desktops in universities. Studies tend to focus on office buildings and suggestions to minimize energy consumption focus on the same. Therefore, this dissertation considers the energy consumption of desktops in universities. The dissertation is divided into three sections, the first focusing on the establishing an inventory, the second measuring the power consumption of desktops and the third analyzing the data, estimating the total energy consumption and identifying potential savings. Additionally, the results from this study can be used as a guideline for developing efficient strategies to achieve potential cost and energy savings.
