dc.description.abstract | Architecture pertaining retail is an under-studied discipline even though it has huge relevance in society. Firstly, retail activities are the core of any urban settlements. Secondly, retail spaces dynamically changes according to consumer pattern and technological innovation. In recent years, online shopping is burgeoning and it is predicted that online shops will significantly absorb retail markets in the near future. This paper seeks to document and investigate the architectural changes in physical spaces of retail e.g. logistical space, shop and public space. The paper firstly analyzes how retail spaces are traditionally designed and discussed. Subsequently, the paper investigate how online shopping develops and discuss their roles in redefining the focus and practice of retail industry. Lastly, the paper utilizes several case studies from matured market in order to conclude the spatial needs of online retailer. Ultimately, this paper acknowledges progress as necessity and instead of looking the online retail as direct competitor of brick-and-mortar shop, aims to capture the dynamic relationship between the two and distill all spatial needs of such space. | |
