dc.description.abstract | This study seeks to examine the role of the Remaking our Heartland (ROH) programme towards the building of social capital. The study has three key objectives. Firstly, it will assess the level of social capital of the residents who are living in the first batch of towns that have undergone the ROH programme. Next, it will investigate the association between the key aspects of the programme and the level of social capital of the residents, and also determine if the association between the level of social capital and the four key ROH aspects varies between the different socio-demographic groupings. Lastly, it will attempt to examine the relationship between the various socio-demographic variables and the level of social capital of the residents. A survey was conducted on 233 residents across the 3 towns that were selected for the first batch of the programme. A social capital index was constructed and the obtained scores were taken as a proxy for the level of social capital. Information about the residents' usage patterns and perceptions of the elements of the ROH programme were also obtained. On the whole, it was established that the residents of the 3 affected towns had generally high levels of social capital, with a mean social capital index score of 3.767. It was also found that that the four key aspects of the ROH programme were positively associated with the level of social capital of the residents. In addition, the study showed that age, household income and marital status were found to significantly affect the level of social capital of the residents, and that the association between the aspects of the ROH programme and the social capital index scores varies across the various socio-demographic variable groupings The findings reinforce the important role that the ROH programme has on the building of social capital and suggest that its key thrusts have been effective in achieving that goal. The dissertation concludes by providing several recommendations for the improvement of the ROH programme. | |
