dc.description.abstract | Regardless of the political status or the development stage of a country, urban hous- ing is always an issue that plays an important role in the country. In the last century, there were many different ways in deign strategy for urban housing. One design strategy was to promote their political view in the city planning, especially in urban housing, such as by taking consideration of the idea of socialism and to practice the idea in the city planning especially in urban housing planning. This dissertation focus on People’s Republic of China, as one of the largest countries in 20 century planned their city as well as urban housing base on the idea of socialism. In almost all cities in China, The Socialist Worker Class New Village was a basic planning strategy in city planning as well as urban housing especially in the period of 1950s to 1980s. Although some parts of the political views and economic structure in China has changed over- time, The New Village that emerged under specific social and political background in 1950s still remains one of the major urban housing types in many cities in China to- day. This dissertation serves to look at the planning and design concept of the New Village, by observing and analyzing the current situation of the New Village, explore some challenges in future development. | |
