Abstract: Façade falling issues augments the need to establish efficient and accurate façade inspection procedures. A project on Autonomous BIM-ready Drone System for Building Façade Inspection has been initiated by a team from the Engineering Department in NUS, of which, the author has assisted in. However, the current stage of the project only focuses on using optical images for machine learning. Optical images may not accurately detect all defects and hence, the use of thermography for façade inspection is explored. This study aims to understand the application of passive thermography and its ability to detect actual masonry defects in a realistic context. Literature is reviewed to understand issues including masonry defects, infrared thermography application and existing studies on the use of thermography on building inspections. A field study was conducted on a Housing Development Board estate to emulate the setting of future façade inspection. Thermal images captured were examined and a framework was established to assist future façade inspectors in analyzing thermography results. Factors that may influence thermography results are also explained. In conclusion, thermography should be incorporated into façade inspections and the drone system as they are able to detect defects beyond what optical images can capture. Its nondestructive and non-contact nature also makes it an efficient technique to be employed. By making façade inspections efficient and accurate, it is hoped that defects can be identified and rectified before it leads to falling façades.
