ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The purpose of this study is to identify the key attributes of a site supervisor that will have a positive impact on a project outcome. As site supervisors play a vital role in construction project, they can contribute in raising construction industry productivity level. The objectives of this study are to: (1) investigate the education level, experience and responsibilities of construction site supervisors, (2) identify the attributes of site supervisors that are associated with project outcomes and (3) recommend attributes to be considered when selecting site supervisors. A questionnaire was designed based on 18 attributes identified from the literature review. Project outcomes are determined based on project cost, schedule, and quality performance as well as client satisfaction. 32 sets of data were collected and analyzed using the SPSS software. The results show that all site supervisors had at least an N (Normal) or O (Ordinary) level qualification, and at least 2 years of working experience. The mean working experience of site supervisors is 11 years. Site supervisors have high responsibilities on project cost and schedule, safety as well as quality of structural, architectural and other specialization works. Among the 18 attributes of site supervisors, the ability of site supervisors in the use of computers (X2), writing reports and emails (X4), attention to important details (X7), overcoming obstacles (X8), ensuring works conform to project specifications (X9), initiative to offer suggestion (X10) and getting along with other workers (X11) are found to be significantly correlated with one of the project outcomes. Site supervisor’s ability to use computer, for updating and monitoring of the project, has a significant positive relation towards on project schedule, quality and client satisfaction. In addition, by having Singaporean site supervisors, with higher educational level and more experience in construction industry, the results show that they have better knowledge and ability in using computer to monitor tasks, resolving conflicts on site, overcoming obstacles, cooperating with employers and leading the teams. It is recommended that companies should provide the necessary training and recruit the right group of people, so as to improve the outcomes of construction projects. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/223780 |
