dc.description.abstract | With the increased number of crane related accidents in the construction industry, efforts have been growing to improve crane safety performance in Singapore. Given the widespread use of cranes in the construction sector, its potential impact on property and life with the occurrence of crane related accidents is a cause for concern. Crane related accidents should be avoided at all cost in the construction sector. To address the growing concern of crane safety in construction sites, the Crane Safety Analysis and Recommendation Report, published in 2009, aims to identify major contributing factors and provide recommendations to improve crane safety performance. However, continued occurrence of crane related accidents after 2009 as shown by statistics, indicates possible limitations with the report. This research aims to identify the possible limitations, which are insufficient coverage of root causes of crane related accidents and implementation issues with the report. The research recommends changes to improve on the report, as well as the crane safety performance in the construction industry. The research methodologies used in this research are literature review, root cause analysis and face-to-face interviews. The review includes literature on uncontrollable and controllable factors affecting crane safety as well as literature on different accident causation models. Root cause analysis of crane related case studies are conducted to identify root causes and justify coverage of the report in terms of sufficiency. The interview respondents include crane suppliers and main contractors in the construction industry. Based on interview findings, effectiveness of recommendations provided by the report are evaluated by the interview respondents. Implementation issues and recommended changes to improve on the report and crane safety performance in the construction industry are identified through the interview sessions as well | |
