dc.description.abstractThis thesis looks at designing a fishery and a boat shelter integrating coastal protection and wave energy conversion on the vulnerable coastline of Central Vietnam (Thua Thien Hue). It suggests how structures can be integrated to encourage the growth of natural defense mechanisms against strong waves in order to protect the erosion of fragile coastline areas. In the study of the existing community in Hai Duong, fishing is very much inseparable from the everyday life of the people. The community of fishermen is vulnerable because of unreliable weather and depleting fish stocks; they need shelter and alternate sources of income. This project will therefore provide a platform for the growth of the fishing community, encouraging proper fishing methods and systems that also deal with the creation of underwater habitats. Over time, energy is absorbed from the waves, generating electrical power that could be rented out to power companies. This project addresses issues of livelihood, with above water spaces for fishing, production and berthing, repair and storage of boats, and under water spaces for wave energy generation and habitat creation.
