Title: | WHAT THE FARM? EXPLORING FOOD PRODUCTION IN SINGAPORE | Authors: | TAN SIEW KWAN DAN | Keywords: | 2020-2021 Architecture Master's MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE Rudi Stouffs Design Thesis |
Issue Date: | 12-Jul-2021 | Citation: | TAN SIEW KWAN DAN (2021-07-12). WHAT THE FARM? EXPLORING FOOD PRODUCTION IN SINGAPORE. ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | As Covid-19 affects global supply chains, Singapore’s lack of Food-Security has become a topic that urgently needs to be addressed. Our initiative to produce 30% of our local consumption by 2030 is a step in the right direction, but one has to question if it is feasible in Singapore's context. This thesis explores novel forms of urban farming, their growth potential, as well as the architectural opportunities that they present. Current initiatives to convert public Multi-Storey Car Park Rooftops into lush urban farms are commendable, but there remains room for complementary innovations.. The research and analysis is conducted from an architectural standpoint, while principally driven by performance metrics. Using a repository of 3D HDB models created by National University of Singapore’s Urban Analytics Lab, detailed daylight simulations are able to be run. Previously unused spaces and surfaces are analysed for their farming potential, both from a business perspective as well as an architectural one. Additionally, these tools can also be used to identify areas where individual households can grow their own crops, potentially providing a savings benefit for lower income households. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/223620 |
