This dissertation deals with the Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay, Singapore and attempts to examine the garden and the city in the context of Singapore. The garden is a strong part of the image and identity of the city of Singapore. The landscape of Singapore has been shaped by the drive since independence (1965) to create a ‘Garden City’. This study of a particular area of landscape and urbanism scopes nature, society and urbanism in its study, hoping to lead to the generation of multiple views of a garden landscape and its meanings to the city. In the last decade the Singapore is undergoing a transformation from ‘Garden City’ to a ‘City in a Garden’, against this backdrop, the Gardens by the Bay project was conceived in 2006. This project in conjunction with other developments aims to transform the Marina Bay area for the 21st century Singapore. The significance of this project to Singapore cannot be overlooked. Hence, this dissertation examines the garden in the landscape of Singapore within the context of a ‘City in a Garden’ through the Gardens by the Bay.
