Abstract: In Singapore and most Commonwealth countries, the British Standards and code of practice are commonly used for structural design. It is anticipated that the current British Standard code BS8110 on concrete structures will be replaced by the Eurocode EC2 in near future. In this final year project, Impact of Eurocode on Concrete Design, comparative studies of EC2 and BS8110 on design of reinforced concrete was carried out. The project focused on comparing the similarities and differences between two codes on the basis of design, shear design and punching shear design. Parametric studies were also performed to achieve a perspective view on the differences between two codes and hence a better understanding of the advantages of EC2 came along. The project also provided comparative examples on shear and punching shear design for beam, solid slab and flat slab. Moreover, some of the views from professionals in the construction industry who have been practicing or studying designs done by both EC2 and BS8110 given in the project to demonstrate the points better at diverse stands. The author hopes that this project will provide a clear understanding of shear and punching shear design for reinforced concrete using EC2 and explore impact of EC2 in design of reinforced concrete especially in the modern days. The study concludes with recommendations to adopt Eurocodes as they are innovative and of high technical quality. They have the most up-to-date information which encompasses expertise from all European countries. Also, it will increase the competitiveness of Singapore in the world-wide activities.
