dc.description.abstract | Singapore's land scarcity meant that a conundrum exists whereby built heritage conservation may take a backseat in order for erection of infrastructure to cater to the country's continued economic growth. With the upcoming generation, the Generation Y, being the next in line to take over Singapore's leadership role, it is of paramount importance that they perceive built heritage conservation as important and that effort is made to understand the factors that influence their perception. The aim of this study seeks to identify factors, or more specifically, generational characteristics that are important in influencing the perception of the Generation Y on built heritage conservation. In addition, the study also examines the factors that are important in influencing these generational characteristics. A mixed method of qualitative and quantitative research was adopted for the study. Factor analysis and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) were used to analyse the survey data. Some important findings from the analysis includes having majority responses (undecided or disagree) in areas of education, technology as well as the external environment, most notably engagement from the government agencies. With no statistical significance between demographic profile and the variables within the questionnaire, it reflects that effort in engaging, and shaping the perception of the Generation Y should focus on their generational characteristics, and a more focused effort could be employed with this understanding. | |
