Neighbour disputes: Case study of Tampines and Punggol new towns

Abstract

In view of the growing problem of neighbour disputes in Singapore, this paper seeks to understand more about the common types of neighbour disputes, factors which can predict the likelihood of neighbour disputes and the methods utilised by residents to resolve disputes. Both Qualitative (Interviews) and Quantitative (Surveys) methods was used in the process of this research. The study was conducted across two HDB New Towns, namely Tampines and Punggol, which represented a Middle-Aged and Young Town respectively. Binary Logistic Regression model was utilised to predict the likelihood of neighbour disputes occurring. The results showed that the most common types of neighbour disputes encountered by respondents are the obstruction of common corridors and noise. Secondly, factors that have a higher likelihood of predicting neighbour disputes are the Strength of relationship between neighbours, Education level, Housing type and Length of residence. Finally, most respondents indicated that they would settle their disputes personally with their neighbours. However, only 29.7% of the respondents were actually successful in resolving the dispute with their neighbours, while others reported that disputes were either unresolved or still occurred occasionally.
