dc.description.abstractThe choice of materials in low cost houses can contribute to improved building performances in terms of ventilation, maintenance and help construct a new living environment. It is necessary to explore alternative materials that reduce the cost of construction; and it is self-sustainable as well as easily maintained. This dissertation will seek to examine bamboo as an alternative material for the construction of low cost houses, as well as it being a livelihood for the local residents. Bamboo, chosen in comparison to other materials that are currently used in the construction of low cost houses in the tropics, is an inexpensive and easily available alternative material. Currently, concrete and steel are the main materials used in construction due to their durability, stiffness and availability. Bamboo however, has always had issues with social acceptance as a construction material due to its ability and durability. This dissertation will evaluate, including an investigation and appraisal on why bamboo is the alternative choice for the construction of the low cost houses. The pros and cons of using this alternative material will also be discussed. Uncovering the opportunities and constraints in using bamboo as a construction material for designing low cost houses through a series of studies, will allow for critical analysis on the preservation and maintenance issues. These allows for a conclusion to be drawn with regards to the issue of bamboo being a viable long-term solution that can be beneficial for the low-income community. This dissertation seeks to contribute to the knowledge of bamboo and also question the efficiency of bamboo as an alternative material in the construction of low cost houses. Information gathered from various experts in the field, coupled with observations from various case studies, will allow for a clearer and more comprehensive understanding in terms of the real-life usage of bamboo. The outcome of the research will enable a reexamination of the suitability of bamboo as a construction material, and it being a source of income for the low-income locals.
