dc.description.abstract | During the initial implementation of the Workplace Safety and Health Act (WSHA), it was successful in curbing workplace fatalities. However, as shown in the latest Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Report 2009, there is a sudden increase in the number of fatalities and workplace fatality rate. This sends out a distressing signal as the industry drifts further away from the WSH 2018 national strategy. Hence, this research is crucial by providing necessary recommendations to improve the current safety performance. The objectives of the research look into investigating the effects of aligning organisation and WSH policies, identifying the relationship between policies and processes and providing policies and processes-related framework to assist firms in enhancing their safety performance. In addition, four research hypotheses are constructed. They suggest that the implementation of policies and good processes that are closely associated to both management and ground levels can help firms to achieve good safety performance. Such safety performance can also be achieved when organisation safety policies are attuned with the WSH policies. Furthermore, it is also proposed that policies which educate workers on the incentives and disincentives must be implemented while avoiding the process of strict implementation. The research methodologies involve survey questionnaire and interviews. Limitations may arise from the small sample size and possible respondent bias as the questionnaire seeks to discover the level of safety implementations in organisations. Through this research, it is found that the alignment of organisation and WSH policies is important and policies with good process implementations pertaining to both management and ground levels should be implemented. Lastly, the research also discovers that firms should educate workers on the incentives and disincentives scheme while not having to strictly enforce the process. | |
