Abstract: The United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was introduced in 2015. Businesses, recognizing that their activities have significant outreach and impact on their stakeholders and the environment they exist in, have long taken steps to adopt practices that help them meet some of these goals. This study report will adopt a case study approach to qualitatively evaluate a Singapore’s firm adherence to GRESB and how it affects performance. It will closely examine how a particular firm, CEREIT, took measures to boost its GRESB score by a significant 43% in its second year of inception (CEREIT, 2020). The REIT’s changes in Distribution Per Unit (DPU) and Net Asset Value (NAV) will also be examined as hallmarks for financial performance. Its sustainability strategy is closely intertwined with the UN SDGs, a clear sign of its commitment to global society in light of the challenges brought about by climate change. The growth of its portfolio, both in quantity and quality has resulted in a steadily growing NAV. Environmental due diligence when acquiring new assets, and Asset Enhancement Initiatives on existing assets make their assets green. Coupled with the good GRESB score, CEREIT is able to cultivate a branding of a REIT that has ESG at its core, which can attract discerning investors. These investors take the plunge having faith in CEREIT to deliver sustainable dividends, as shown by the steady DPU. CEREIT is young and already a promising stock on the SGX. With time, CEREIT can truly be the trendsetter for the industry, defining the norms that will benefit society and the environment at large.
