RE: GENTRIFICATION - REGARDING GENTRIFICATION AND URBAN REGENERATION IN TIONG BAHRU

Abstract

This paper aims to use the framework of the process of gentrification as a method to explore the pertinent issues regarding social and urban changes in the site of Tiong Bahru, Singapore. The following points sum up the issues regarding gentrification that will be explored in the paper. Re:Gentrification is a critique and re-examining of the traditional process of gentrification; the sociological process defined by American and European Geographers, appropriating it as a framework to study and map the existing urban context of Tiong Bahru. Re:Gentrification is the regarding of the process of gentrification as integral in representing the 'place' of Tiong Bahru. Re:Gentrification is my understanding of the urban rehabilitation process in Tiong Bahru as a catalyst of urban change. Re:Gentrification is using the process of gentrification to study and understand the urban regeneration of Tiong Bahru. Re:Gentrification is the acknowledgement of the sociological framework of gentrification as a driver of urban change and transformation. Finally the culmination of the research and site findings would discern the Singapore context of the process of gentrification, and establish that Gentrification as a social process is a driver of urban change and transformation in Tiong Bahru.
