Abstract: The daily solid waste disposed of in 2014 is 8,338 tonnes. This is 5.4 times increase as compared to 1,300 tonnes in 1970. With such a rapid increase in the amount of waste disposed, the waste management situation is not sustainable in Singapore, especially with the scarcity of land available for landfills. Although Singapore has been efficient and innovative in this area from building waste-to-energy incineration plant to offshore landfill, there are still rooms for improvement. The objectives of this dissertation are to study the solid waste management in Singapore in terms of its system, policies, effectiveness and future development. In addition, the features of the solid waste management in Taipei and Tokyo were highlighted for feasible implementation in Singapore. Based on the research findings, recommendations are made on how to improve the solid waste management in Singapore in terms of policy, future infrastructure development, land use planning and operation of IPs.
