dc.description.abstract | Receptivity towards vertical greenery as a green solution to global warming effect and various environmental concerns is increasing. It optimizes existing unused vertical surfaces to replace lost greenery on the ground therefore this approach is especially viable in Singapore given the high density of skyscrapers and land constraints. Being a relatively new concept, the resources and knowledge on vertical greenery system are limited. In order to raise awareness, boost confidence and consequently increase take-up rate, there is a need to impart technical knowledge on the vertical greenery systems and the influence of certain components on performance. This paper discusses critical issues of vertical greenery systems associated with its initial set-up and maintenance and operation. Critical issues associated with vertical greenery system include designing a structural support and mounting attachment with sufficient load-bearing capacity, mounting the system at a strategic location and orientation, selecting good growing media and plant species which require low maintenance, designing an efficient fertigation system as well as managing health and safety risks. Comprehensive knowledge on these issues, remove the uncertainties of its sustainability hence increasing take-up rate. Survey and interview questionnaires are carried out to gain an insight on how various factors of considerations affects the decision-making of professionals such as landscape architects and building managers. Besides educating stakeholders on the critical issues and factors that should be taken into consideration when deciding on one alternative over another, government can also provide support in terms of incentives, regulatory measures and guidelines. | |
