A CITY'S CHARACTER: A STUDY OF MARINA BAY WATERFRONT

Abstract

The vision for Marina Bay is in becoming a high quality 24/7 live-work-play environment, a concept of the urban playground living that epitomize the essence of the global city that Singapore can achieve – live, work and play by the bay. Marina Bay has deemed to be a place for people from all walks of life to explore, exchange and entertain. Hypothesing with this vision, this dissertation aims to access the success of the ‘liveliness' of Marina Bay through urban theorists Jan Gehl and Allen Jacobs. As liveliness involves levels of activities, uses and includes a network of interactions, the dissertation explores and understands the behavioral patterns of people and their variety of activities observed along the necklace of attractions of the 4km circuit which surrounds Marina Bay water body,this physical walkable series of urban spaces will be the principle subject of study. This dissertation hopes to derive a set of refined parameters for determining what constitutes a lively space, and finally adjudge if Marina Bay is a vibrant and energetic place to be.
