ScholarBank@NUS Repository. | Abstract: | The issue of fragmentation within the construction industry has always been present; many consider its presence detrimental to the overall performance of the construction industry. Lower productivity, poor value for money, and substandard work have all been attributed as consequences of fragmentation. Despite this, fragmentation is further exacerbated by the widespread adoption of subcontracting practices by both main contractors and subcontractors, due to the popularity of trade specialisation. Therefore, this study focuses on how such fragmentation, through the widespread adoption of subcontracting practices, affects construction productivity when operating under the commonly adopted multi-layered subcontracting system (MLSS). Three key theories were discussed in detail during the literature review stage due to their relevance and significance to the study. Subsequently, a combinative explanatory framework that serves to merge the three theories into a common platform has been formulated, which serves to exemplify the reasons as to the presence of an MLSS in the local industry that has eventually led to the prevalence of subcontracting. A qualitative study is adopted, where 20 interviews were conducted and then subsequently transcribed into data text files to undergo content analysis via data mining and analytics. A renowned data-mining and analytics software, Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) Miner 4.0, has been employed to aid in the content analysis under a proposed coding framework. The purpose of employing a qualitative approach is to allow researchers to better appreciate and comprehend the reasons behind the emergence of the results after the analysis is completed after the interviews. The findings in this study have shown that resource deployment is the main reason for firms to adopt subcontracting practices, as it allows for flexibility in the deployment of a firm’s resources under various changing circumstances. This will likely result in a strong positive trend of an increase in construction productivity for the industry. Nonetheless, the results also point to the possibility of a decline in work productivity if resource deployment is not properly executed. In addition, such content analysis has also uncovered a new realm in the construction industry that can be explored in future research based on the rich qualitative data that have been uncovered from the interviews. | URI: | https://scholarbank.nus.edu.sg/handle/10635/222544 |
