Abstract: By focusing on sustainability in urban development, this study highlights the impact of unplanned growth on land use and natural environment. Mumbai, taken up as a case study, is one of the best examples of amalgamation of urban growth with environmental degradation due to high population density and unplanned economic growth. The study further discusses the loop holes in policy management system and how they are overruled by government organizations on the name of urban development. The Concepts of sustainable urban development and their approaches for sustainable city are studied to have a better understanding of development goals and its indicator system. Finally, it concludes with remarks on traditional management system and suggests the steps that municipalities can adopt to achieve sustainable development in their plans.
